We were born in a culture where afternoon is siesta time or if you find it hard to sleep, you just have to turn on your television and watch your favorite afternoon Soap Opera.

Let’s have a trivia for a while.
Wondering why it is called SOAP OPERA? Mainly because these shows was sponsored by the country’s leading first synthetic detergent, used as soap, from then, it was known as SOAP OPERA. Aha!

A short peep of radio history will introduce us to the Lord of Soap Opera, Lucio Maylas a veteran dramatist, director of DZBB various soap operas.  In his interview in one leading broadsheet, he confirms that he is almost 58 years working in radio as director and dubber.

He dubbed a lot of telenovelas from different radio and tv channels. To mention, “Solita”, “Robin Hood” “Shoukoushi Ceddie”  - Ceddie ang Munting Prinsipe “Princess Sarah” for ABS-CBN and he also directed “Damdamin” in year 1978 for GMA Channel 7.

But before Maylas reached this far of success, he has been through a tough situation. He became a newsboy and while delivering those newspapers he heard the drama “Prinsipe Amante” of Tony Cayado and Doro delos Ojos, that time he began to dream as one of the cast, then he told to himself that someday he will work in that field.

He perseveres and endured three months of training at Philippine Manufacturing Company without salary, but his perseverance paid off when he ended up as the best soundman of “Prinsipe Amante”

Mr. Maylas admitted that doing soap opera during 50s is not as profitable now, that’s why radio talents are now professional dubbers.  On the other hand, he also confessed that recording that time is really a challenge. He revealed that he was among the first talents at GMA’s EDSA studio. That time, there were no schools and training for voice acting and radio drama, they just learned through experiences.

According to Mr. Maylas, to succeed and last long in your chosen field, you have to concentrate and if you’re aiming for something stick to it and he stressed out that you should have faith in God.

Attached below is the video clip of Mr. Lucio Maylas oh his speech in one event. Enjoy watching!
